The building's origins

A mansion
over a century old

Hotel Tarasco wasn't built to be a hotel. It became one because it was too beautiful to keep to ourselves.

  1. 1920

    The mansion is built

The Villanueva family built the mansion as a stately residence. Its adobe and pink quarry-stone walls, round arches and central courtyard with a fountain are a landmark of Michoacán colonial architecture.

  2. 1968

    Opening as a hotel

Don Manuel Villanueva, grandson of the original builder, turned the property into lodging for the travelers discovering Pátzcuaro. His vision: preserve the architecture without sacrificing comfort.

  3. 2003

    Full restoration

The third generation restored the original pine beams and fired-clay floors and added bathrooms with handmade Talavera tiles, respecting every inch of the century-old structure.

  4. Today

    Fourth generation, same soul

The family is still at the helm. Every room has a name, not a number. The building is over a hundred years old and is still, above all, a home.

"I wanted everyone who came to Pátzcuaro to have a place that made them feel they had traveled a hundred years back in time, but with all the comfort of the present."
Don Manuel Villanueva — Founder, 1968

Purépecha identity

Purépecha at heart,
modern in spirit

The hotel's name, materials and cuisine pay tribute to the people who made Michoacán what it is today.

Hand-worked copper craft from Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán

Santa Clara copper

20 min from the hotel, hand-hammered since the 16th century.

Purépecha textiles hand-woven with natural wool

Purépecha textiles

Natural wool dyed with local pigments, woven on a backstrap loom.

Why "Tarasco"?

The name the Mexica gave the Purépecha people — and one we carry with pride.

Hammered copper from Santa Clara, lacquerware from Uruapan, Talavera tiles and wool textiles make up the hotel's visual DNA. Not as themed decoration, but as genuine recognition of the artisans who create them.
